The short answer
An Olympic triathlon is a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike and a 10 km run, raced back to back. Most amateurs finish in about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes, roughly twice a Sprint and half a Half. It is the first distance where fueling, pacing and a real race week start to matter.
The distance, in kilometres and miles
| Leg | Kilometres | Miles |
|---|---|---|
| Swim | 1.5 km | 0.93 mi |
| Bike | 40 km | 24.9 mi |
| Run | 10 km | 6.2 mi |
| Total | 51.5 km | 32 mi |
Some local races run a little short or long, especially on the swim and bike, so read the course description before you compare times between events. The full ladder is on triathlon distances.
Typical finish times
Published averages for amateur finishers sit between about 2:45 and 3:10. Triathlete's data puts the average at about 2:53 for men and 3:07 for women, and other sites quote 2:45 as typical. Those samples differ in who they count, so treat any one number as an estimate. Elite athletes finish in around 1:45.
A rough split for a 3:00 finish is a 30 to 35 minute swim, about 1:25 on the bike, about 55 minutes on the run, and 5 to 8 minutes across both transitions (an estimate, not a rule). To turn your own paces into a number, use the race time calculator. More on how times break down is on how long a triathlon takes.
How it differs from a Sprint
A Sprint is over before fueling matters. An Olympic takes close to three hours, so you should plan to drink on the bike and have a gel or two for the run. The swim is twice as long, which makes wetsuit fit, sighting and where you line up at the start more important. The run comes off a 40 km ride, so the first kilometre will feel heavy; a few brick sessions before race day help with that.
For age groupers, Olympic races are almost always non-drafting, which means you must keep a gap to the rider ahead. Check the race rules, and read triathlon rules for beginners before your first start.
Race preparation for an Olympic
You need the same kit as a Sprint plus more nutrition: bottles or a hydration setup, two or three gels, and a spare tube if you ride unsupported. Use the triathlon packing list for the full set and the race week checklist for the days before. Water temperature decides the wetsuit question; check it with the wetsuit temperature calculator. Questions
How far is an Olympic triathlon?
An Olympic triathlon is a 1.5 km swim (0.93 miles), a 40 km bike (24.9 miles) and a 10 km run (6.2 miles), 51.5 km in total.
How long does an Olympic triathlon take?
Most amateurs finish in about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes. Published averages are about 2:53 for men and 3:07 for women, and elites finish in around 1:45. Treat these as estimates.
Is an Olympic triathlon hard for a beginner?
It is a step up from a Sprint but realistic for a beginner with a few months of consistent swimming, cycling and running. The swim is the usual limiter, so be able to swim 1.5 km continuously before you enter.
Do I need to eat during an Olympic triathlon?
Yes, for most people. At close to three hours, plan to drink on the bike and take a gel or two, with your last one before or early in the run. Practise it in training first.
Is drafting allowed in an Olympic triathlon?
In most age group races it is not. You must stay a set distance behind the rider ahead and pass quickly. Draft-legal racing is mostly for elites and some junior events, so check your race rules.
