Transition time calculator

Budget your T1 and T2 from the length of transition and what you have to do in it. See what a faster change is worth on your finish time.

Estimated T1 and T2

T1 3:30, T2 2:00

Together 5:30. Cutting one minute from either is worth one minute on your finish time. On the bike that would take about 0.2 km/h more over the whole Half course.

How it works

How the estimate is built

These are estimates. There is no official table of correct transition times, so each transition is built from steps: the run to your bike, taking the wetsuit off, a change tent if your kit is in a bag, helmet and number, and the shoes. Each step has a round-number time for a typical age grouper.

The run is the length you enter divided by a running speed with a bike: about 2 m/s if you are new, 2.5 if you have practised and 3 if you drill transitions. Wet feet, cleats and steering a bike keep it well below your normal running speed. The experience setting also scales the handling steps, because practice is where most of the time is saved.

The totals land at about 1 to 3 minutes per transition in a Sprint or Olympic race with racked kit, and 3 to 10 minutes in a Full with a change tent. Those ranges are our rough estimates and have not been checked against a published dataset, so your own rehearsal with a stopwatch is the better number.

Where the time goes

  • The change tent. Going through a bag is the biggest single cost in a Full, roughly 2 to 4 minutes a transition by our estimate. Racked kit skips it.
  • Bike shoes. Shoes clipped to the pedals save the sitting down and the shoe change in T1, and cost a few seconds of mounting, which only pays once you have practised it.
  • The wetsuit. Pull it to your waist while you run and take it off over your feet at the bike. Practise it once with a stopwatch.
  • The distance. A long run to the bike is time you cannot practise away, so check the race map.

What a faster change is worth

A minute saved in transition is a minute off your finish time, with no extra effort once you have practised. The result shows what that would take on the bike: how much faster you would need to ride, on average, over the whole course, to save the same minute. It uses a typical speed of 28 to 30 km/h.

Put your transition rehearsal in the last week before the race. The packing list covers what goes in each bag, the race week checklist has the dates, and the race time calculator adds your new T1 and T2 to your finish.

Questions

How long should T1 take in a triathlon?

As a rough estimate, about 1 to 3 minutes in a Sprint or Olympic race with racked kit, 2 to 5 minutes in a Half, and 3 to 10 minutes in a Full where you use a change tent. A change tent can add 2 to 4 minutes. These are our estimates, not published norms.

How long should T2 take in a triathlon?

T2 is usually shorter than T1. As a rough estimate, about 1 to 2 minutes with racked kit, and 2 to 5 minutes in a Full where you change in a tent.

Should I leave my bike shoes clipped to the pedals?

It saves the sitting down and the shoe change in T1, but only if you have practised the mount. If you have not practised it, putting your shoes on in transition is faster than falling off.

How much time can I save in transition?

A new athlete can often find a minute or two per transition with practice (our estimate), mostly by laying out kit in order and rehearsing the wetsuit and shoes. After that the gains get small.

Are transition times included in my swim and bike times?

No. In results, T1 and T2 are timed separately, but the cumulative bike cutoff in an IRONMAN race includes the swim and T1.
