The short answer
A Sprint triathlon is a 750 m swim (0.47 mi), a 20 km bike (12.4 mi) and a 5 km run (3.1 mi), 25.75 km in total. Published averages put the finish at about 1 hour 36 minutes for men and 1 hour 46 minutes for women, around 1 hour 40 minutes overall. A first-timer should plan for roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours.
The distance and what it feels like
| Leg | Distance | Beginner estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Swim | 750 m (0.47 mi) | 15 to 19 minutes |
| T1 | 1.5 to 3 minutes | |
| Bike | 20 km (12.4 mi) | 48 to 55 minutes |
| T2 | 1 to 2 minutes | |
| Run | 5 km (3.1 mi) | 32 to 37 minutes |
The times in the last column are estimates built from common beginner paces (about 2:00 to 2:30 per 100 m in the swim, 22 to 25 km/h on the bike, 6:30 to 7:30 per km on the run), not measured data. Add them up for your own paces with the race time calculator. Convert paces with the pace converter.
Sprints are not always exactly this. Pool-based races often cut the swim to 300 to 400 m, and a bike course can run a little long or short. The Sprint is a fixed distance in World Triathlon's rulebook (750 m, 20 km, 5 km), but organisers adapt it to the venue.
How long it takes, with the source
Marathon Handbook, citing TriGearLab, puts the average Sprint finish at about 1:40 across all ages and sexes, with men near 1:36 and women near 1:46. Those are averages across finishers, so the middle of the pack, not a target. If you are new to all three sports, a finish between 1:30 and 2:00 is a good result. The elite winners of a European Cup Sprint finish in about 54 minutes (men) and 61 minutes (women), for scale. See how long a triathlon takes for the other distances.
What race day looks like
You rack your bike and set out your gear in transition, walk to the swim start, and go off in a wave or a rolling start. Out of the water you run to your bike (T1), put on your helmet and fasten it, and ride the course, often as one or two loops. You rack the bike, change shoes (T2) and run to the finish. The whole thing is done in under two hours, so the course usually offers little beyond water, and one bottle on the bike is typically enough (an estimate; check the athlete guide).
The rules that matter in a Sprint are the common ones: helmet fastened from rack to rack, mount after the line, no headphones, race number visible, and no drafting (12 m, 25 seconds to pass). A drafting penalty is 30 seconds in a Sprint under World Triathlon and USA Triathlon rules, and other infringements cost 10 seconds. The rules page compares them in full.
What to get right before the start
A Sprint is short enough that the race is won in the preparation. Packing the right bag (packing list), counting down the final week (race week checklist), knowing how the water temperature affects your wetsuit choice (wetsuit temperature calculator) and rehearsing the changes (transition time calculator) each save minutes that fitness cannot. For the first one, start at the back of your wave and enjoy it. Once you have a result, the Olympic distance is the next step, and Sprint dates are in the race directory.

Questions
How long is a Sprint triathlon?
A Sprint triathlon is a 750 m swim, a 20 km bike ride and a 5 km run, 25.75 km in total. In miles that is 0.47, 12.4 and 3.1.
How long does a Sprint triathlon take?
The published average is about 1 hour 36 minutes for men and 1 hour 46 minutes for women, around 1 hour 40 minutes overall. First-timers usually finish between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Is a Sprint triathlon hard for a beginner?
It is demanding but manageable. The total effort is under two hours, and most people who can swim 750 m, ride 20 km and run 5 km separately can finish by pacing the day. The swim start is the part that unsettles most newcomers.
How much faster is a Super Sprint than a Sprint?
A Super Sprint, typically a 400 m swim, 10 km bike and 2.5 km run, takes about half the time of a Sprint, so roughly 45 minutes to an hour for a beginner (an estimate).
What is the penalty for drafting in a Sprint triathlon?
Under World Triathlon and USA Triathlon rules a drafting penalty in a Sprint is 30 seconds, served in a penalty box. The draft zone is 12 m and you have 25 seconds to complete a pass.
